Deutschlandticket for students: Socially acceptable price must be secured in the long term

Statement from the Deutsches Studierendenwerk (DSW) on the implementation of the Deutschlandticket for students to date

  • DSW's most important demand: Price cap of the ticket for students to be based on their living conditions, decoupling from the price development of the Deutschlandticket
  • Further demands: Existing option to take children with you for the 8% of student parents, allow all students to take bicycles with them on the student Deutschlandticket as well

Berlin, April 9, 2024: If the Deutschlandticket for students is given a permanent price cap that is justifiable for students and students are allowed to take their children with them on the existing semester tickets, the federal and state governments can secure student mobility in the long term and help the Deutschlandticket for students gain even greater acceptance. This is the argument put forward by the Deutsches Studierendenwerk (DSW) in a statement on the implementation of the Deutschlandticket for students to date.

As the DSW explains in its statement, the situation with the Deutschlandticket for students, who currently pay 29.40 euros per month for it, is inconsistent for the summer semester 2024: "At some university locations, the introduction could be realized for the summer semester 2024 or implementation is planned for the winter semester 2024/25. In other regions, the offer was rejected in principle and therefore not introduced or it was often not possible to implement it for the 2024 summer semester or introduce it for the 2024/25 winter semester due to time constraints."

The DSW proposes a series of organizational, administrative and technical improvements to the federal and state governments in view of the previous implementation practice of transport associations, universities, student bodies and student organizations, as well as tangible material improvements:

  • to introduce a permanent, socially acceptable price cap that is geared towards the living conditions of students and is not linked to the price development of the Deutschlandticket

  • to introduce the option of taking children with you for the 8% or around 230,000 students with children on the Deutschlandticket for students, as well as the option of taking bicycles with you on previous semester tickets

  •  to extend the voluntary upgrade solution from a regionally limited semester ticket to a nationwide student Deutschlandticket for all students beyond the winter semester 2024/2025.

Matthias Anbuhl, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsches Studierendenwerk, explains: "The federal and state governments can make the Deutschlandticket even more attractive for students with just a few improvements and thus secure student mobility in the long term."
